Take good care of yourself
It’s important to take good care of yourself. Freshman year is hard even for the smartest students. Eating greasy burgers and wearing the same dirty clothes for two weeks in a row is more than just a distraction, it’s a hindrance. It’s easier than it looks to take care of yourself and maintain a healthy attitude.
Eat right
Eating right is simpler these days than ever before. Even the greasiest of greasy spoons offers a salad. Replace one of your usual quick burger and fries with a chef salad full of ham, cheese and veggies and you thank yourself in the morning. Keep nutritious breakfast foods on hand instead of grabbing those donuts on your way to class. There is a multitude of quick fix, single serving oatmeal’s and whole grain hot cereals to pop in the microwave. Thirty seconds later and TA-DA! Brain food! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. There is a reason you’ve heard that a million times. It’s true.
Personal hygiene is a must
Personal hygiene is a must. Living in close confines with a total stranger makes it even more important. No one wants to smell someone else’s questionable odors. College life is busy and hectic. It may seem like you don’t have a spare minute but make the time for a 10-minute shower at least every other day. Use deodorant daily and don’t forget to brush your teeth. Your roommate will thank you. Some school dorms even have their own rules about hygiene. It’s that important. Besides making life easier for your peers staying clean helps you to stay healthy.
Even if you are the cleanest guy in class, you cant tell it if your clothes are always dirty. Mastering the task of laundry is as important as personal hygiene. It may seem like a no-brainer but it really does take a bit of practice. You cant just pile everything into the 40-lb. machine in the laundromat, dump in a box of powder and read your American History text for 25 minutes. Your clothes have to be separated into colors- at least light colors and dark colors. Whites and blacks are washed separately alone.
Follow the instructions on the clothing tag and on the box of detergent. Use bleach sparingly and put you clothes into the dryer right away, leaving clothes wet will cause them to mildew.
It takes a while to get the hang of your new found responsibilities but it isn’t impossible. Remember, it is all your own good. Everything you do is to aid in your journey to independence an adulthood. Congratulations!
