Freshman year in college is an exciting and scary time. Its a good idea to be able to know what to expect ahead of time so you don’t wander around with a dazed look on your face, late to every class. Don’t expect it to be anything near high school. It’s not. College is a whole new ball game and your just the benchwarmer even if you were the quarterback in high school.

Be prepared
Be prepared to be a little confused. Even the smallest community colleges can be amaze of confusion to someone who is unfamiliar with the campus. Show up a week early and scout out the campus. Take your class schedule and map out at least two different routes to and from each class. Get to know the lay out of the school and grounds. Wandering aimlessly now will save you from doing so with a full campus of students.
Be responsible
The biggest shock for new freshman may be the learning factor. No one is there to hold your hand and urge you on to do your homework. No one cares if or when you attend class or how well you do. In college you are completely responsible for your own learning. The professors are their to do their jobs and will not call your parents if you are mysteriously absent or miss one test to many. Don’t revel in your new found freedom to long however. Your GPA may never recover and you’ll find yourself wishing you’d realized your adulthood a tad sooner.
Be part of different orientations
Be prepared to take part in many different orientations. If your smart you will, anyway. There will be Freshman orientation, registration orientation and orientations for specific classes. Each will have valuable information that can make your first few days of school much more livable.
It is sometimes hard for freshman to get accustomed to the financial planning associated to living away from home too. All to often they find themselves with more month left than money and end up eating crackers and ketchup.
Prepare an extra money
Prepare a budget that allots a certain amount of money for your expenses and entertainment and stick to it. Unless you just like crackers and ketchup. You can also expect to be faced with problems and issues that your parents formerly dealt with for you. Tuition late this month? It’s you they come to. Get into a little skirmish on campus? No daddy to bail you out. Get ready to reap what you sow. Remember that the decisions you make in this pivotal first year could effect you for the rest of your college life and beyond.

All in all freshman year is a rewarding experience. Growing up can be difficult at times but it happens to everyone. Take it one step at a time and you’ll have memories that last a lifetime.
